Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins will be the featured speaker at the Overland Park Rotary Club meeting on Monday, Dec. 10 at 11:30 a.m. Treasurer Jenkins will speak to the group's community and business leaders about the activities and responsibilities of the State Treasurer's office.
The Treasurer's office administers the Kansas 529 Education Savings Program, Learning Quest, reconnects Kansans with their lost or forgotten cash and property through the Unclaimed Property program, and directs a number of other programs.
The State Treasurer's office is holding over $190 million worth of unclaimed cash and property for Kansans. Citizens are encouraged to visit www.KansasCash.com or call 1-800-432-0386. Unclaimed Property claims may include dormant checking and savings accounts, insurance benefits, oil and gas royalties, safe deposit box contents, stock and cash dividends, utility deposits, wages and court deposits that have been either forgotten or never received by the rightful owners.
Jenkins, a former State Representative and Senator from Topeka, was re-elected to her second term as Kansas State Treasurer on Nov. 7, 2006. During her time as Treasurer, Jenkins has expanded investment options in Learning Quest and oversaw the re-bidding of the program, returned an average of $9 million a year in unclaimed property to Kansans, initiated multiple financial literacy programs, and eliminated the reliance on state general fund dollars to operate the office. She is a Certified Public Accountant and former small business owner.
