State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA will speak to third, fourth and fifth grade students at Skyline Elementary School about the importance of saving money. She and representatives from the school's 'Save@School' financial institution partner will then officially kick-off the program. Skyline is the first school in USD 438 to participate in the program.
'Save@School' introduces students to the concepts of money management by having participating students open savings accounts and make deposits on scheduled days at their schools. The school will also offer a class based on curriculum distributed by the State Treasurer's office and approved by the Kansas Department of Education and receive tours of the financial partner's institutions.
"It is crucial that we teach young people about money and how to use it," said Treasurer Jenkins. "Money management skills are vital to a financially secure future for our children and Kansas."
There are 'Save@School' programs operating in all four corners of Kansas. Some participating in the program include Jay Shideler, Pauline South, McClure and Christ the King Elementary Schools in Topeka; Woodrow Wilson and Lee Elementary Schools in Manhattan; Marysville Elementary in Marysville; and Cottonwood and Sunflower Intermediate schools in Liberal.
Jenkins, a former State Representative and Senator from Topeka, was elected Treasurer on November 5, 2002. She is a Certified Public Accountant and former small business owner. Since being sworn into office in January 2003, Jenkins has expanded investments options in Learning Quest, initiated multiple financial literacy programs, and eliminated the office's reliance on state general fund dollars.
