Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA to Kick-off Christ the King Elementary School 'Save@School' Program
WHO:  Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA and Christ            the King 4th grade students

WHAT:  Official kick-off to Christ the King elementary              school's 'Save@School' program

WHEN:  Monday, Feb. 6 at 8:15 a.m.

LOCATION:  Christ the King Elementary School, 5973 SW                     25th St.

State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA will speak to more than 50 fourth grade students at Christ the King elementary school about the importance of saving money. She and representatives from Kansas Super Chief Credit Union (KSCCU), the school's 'Save@School' financial institution partner, will then officially kick-off the program.

'Save@School' introduces students to the concepts of money management by having participating students open savings accounts and make deposits on scheduled days at their schools. The school will also offer a class based on curriculum distributed by the State Treasurer's office and approved by the Kansas Department of Education and receive tours of the financial partner's institutions.

"It is crucial that we teach young people about money and how to use it," said Treasurer Jenkins. "Money management skills are vital to a financially secure future for our children and Kansas."

"I am thrilled to once again partner with Kansas Super Chief Credit Union to help educate Topeka's children on money management skills," continued Treasurer Jenkins.

"Kansas Super Chief Credit Union is proud to be involved in the 'Save@School' program with Christ the King Elementary school to help teach the students how to make knowledgeable decisions as savers, spenders and borrowers," said Jessica Stormann, KSCCU V.P. of Business Development. "The credit union will also be at the school for Savings Days so the children can make deposits into their Kirby Kangaroo Club account."

"This is a fun, hands on learning experience for the students," continued Stormann.

This is the second time State Treasurer Jenkins has partnered with KSCCU. In September 2005, a 'Save@School' program was established at McClure Elementary School. Since that time, more than 75 accounts have been opened with students making deposits twice a month.

"I was delighted to hear that students at McClure Elementary saved their holiday money and deposited it into their savings accounts when they went back to school after the winter break," Treasurer Jenkins said. "Obviously the teachers and KSCCU staff are doing a great job of teaching the students about saving money."

There are 'Save@School' programs operating in all four corners of Kansas. Some participating in the program include the two established by the KSCCU at McClure and Christ the King Elementary Schools. K-State Federal Credit Union has opened 'Save@School' programs for students at Woodrow Wilson and Lee Elementary Schools in Manhattan. The Educational Credit Union located in Topeka has programs at Jay Shideler and Pauline South Elementary Schools. The Golden Plains Credit Union and The Community Bank, both located in Liberal, work with students at Cottonwood and Sunflower Intermediate schools on saving money.

Kansas Super Chief Credit Union is a not-for-profit and member owned financial institution established in 1957 to help meet the financial needs of its members. Membership is open to all Kansas residents. For more information call (785) 228-0149 or log on to www.ksccu.com.

Jenkins, a former State Representative and Senator from Topeka, was elected Treasurer on November 5, 2002. She is a Certified Public Accountant and former small business owner. Since being sworn into office in January 2003, Jenkins has expanded investments options in Learning Quest, initiated multiple financial literacy programs, and eliminated the office's reliance on state general fund dollars.
