Topeka - Today, Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA, thanked employees of the treasurer's office for their hard work during this year's Project Topeka campaign. According to official results, the office raised over 1.17 tons of food for the annual drive and took first place among state agencies with under 100 employees.
"It is a great day for this office and for the employees that worked so hard to make this year's event such a success. But the real winner today is Project Topeka. The dedication and effort that was put into our annual campaign will go toward a worthy cause," said Jenkins. "The food and money raised from the drive will support Project Topeka and those who benefit from their services. Next year will be even better." Jenkins commended all of the treasurer's office staff members and thanked the co-chairs of the campaign: Carol Sprague, Kay Seagrove and Pat Bruns.
Jenkins' staff used a number of different methods to raise money, including: a chili cook-off, a frozen custard treat sale, gift baskets, sold jeans day passes and provided cash for food. The most interesting fundraising tool came when Jenkins auctioned off her on-grounds parking spot for eight days. Jenkins said, "I couldn't think of a better way to utilize my parking spot for such a great project. I was happy to do it."
Jenkins, a former State Representative and Senator from Topeka, was elected as the 37th Kansas State Treasurer on November 5, 2002. A Certified Public Accountant and small business owner, she ran for the office with a pledge to expand Learning Quest, initiate a financial literacy program for young children and to make the office more accessible and user friendly to all Kansans.
