Could you use some extra money? There might be some waiting for you, there are no strings or fees attached and your name won't be added to any mailing lists. Plus, it's YOUR money. It sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Surprising as it sounds, millions of dollars belonging to Kansans are being held by the Kansas State Treasurer's office and I want to get it back to you!
When businesses, banks, utility and insurance companies, hospitals and others cannot find you to return the financial assets, it is sent to the State Treasurer's office to the tune of $12 to $15 million each year. The businesses are required by law to remove assets from their books that do not belong to them and turn them over to the state so the rightful owner can be found. These unclaimed assets include inactive savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, stock shares and bonds, dividend checks, insurance proceeds, mineral royalties, and utility deposits.
Currently, there is more than $190 million in unclaimed property being held for Kansas citizens and businesses. In addition to the cash, stocks, and bonds, safe deposit boxes are also turned over to the State Treasurer's office on an annual basis. There are over 8,400 safe deposit boxes with family heirlooms, collectibles and memorabilia in the office's vault as the rightful owners and/or heirs are being searched for.
Finding out how much is being held on your behalf is safe and easy. Reconnecting Kansans with their lost or forgotten cash and property is a free and confidential service offered by the State Treasurer's office. Do not fear that your name and contact information will be sold when you contact my office. We are a state agency here to serve you.
Individuals who will be attending the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson from Sept. 5 to 14 are encouraged to stop by our booth in the Meadowlark Building to search our secure, on-line database. Millions are sent to my office annually and some of it might belong to you!
In addition, if you ever lived in another state, check that state's unclaimed property department also. Visit www.MissingMoney.com for each state's official unclaimed property administrators' contact information and to find out if they are holding financial assets that belong to you!
