Growing up in Kansas, I was like every other kid and our family was a
lot like yours. My family has lived in Kansas for over six-generations and I was raised on a dairy farm in Holton (just North of Topeka). Like you, we had to go to school, do our homework and complete our chores. One of my chores was to get up every morning and milk the cows…some days it seemed like the chore list my parents gave me was a mile long. Have you ever felt that way? But somehow, together with my brother and sister, we were able to get all the chores done.
After I left the farm, I went to Kansas State University and Weber State College where I received a degree in accounting with a minor in economics. I have two children, Hayley and Hayden.
On November 5, 2002, I was elected by the people of Kansas to be your 37th State Treasurer. I am one of five elected officials (excluding our two US Senators) who are elected by voters all across Kansas. The other statewide elected officials include: Governor/Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner and Secretary of State. Each of these people has an important job to do!
You have an important job to do too! Your job is to stay in school, work very hard, get involved in your community and learn as much as possible so that you help make our state a better place to live.
Now that I have told you about me, I would like to hear from you. Please write me at: 900 SW Jackson, Suite 201, Topeka, KS 66612-1235.
