An image of the treasurer Helping Kansas citizens to make responsible financial decisions will promote financial growth and healthier families well into the future. Financial knowledge is the key to empowering an individual or family to become more financially secure and independent.

I want to help Kansans be successful financially and that is why my office is offering the following financial literacy resources. These financial tools will help Kansans stretch their money to work harder for them.

Grade School Age
  • Junior Achievement of Wichita is an organization that has financial literacy programs in schools in Wichita. Junior Achievement sends community volunteers into Wichita schools to help teach elementary students through high school students about economics.

  • Junior Achievement of Northeast Kansas is an organization that has financial literacy programs in schools in northeast Kansas. Junior Achievement sends community volunteers into schools to help teach elementary students through high school students about economics.

  • Financial Foundations for Kids is a computer-based program that helps teach kids about financial literacy and economic principles. The program is suitable for children in grades K-8. All 75 lessons and teacher training are provided free to elementary and middle schools in Kansas. This courseware is brought to you by the Kansas Council on Economic Education.

  • Kids' Club Savings Program is a program that allows elementary aged kids to open savings accounts during school and teaches them about financial responsibilities. The program is sponsored by First National Bank and has been implemented in Goodland and Colby.

  • Teach Children to Save is a program offered through local banks and created for young children. The curriculum is put together by the American Bankers Association and is distributed by local banks. The goal is to get children to start saving early, so that they will practice good financial skills in the future. To see if this program is offered in your town, contact your local banks.

  • Save @ School is a program where a financial institution partners with a local elementary school to implement a program that teaches 4-6th graders about basic money skills and encourages them to open savings accounts and to save on a regular basis. A curriculum that has been approved by the Kansas State Board of Education is provided by the State Treasurer's Office. This curriculum of twelve lesson plans is taught by the teacher and staff of the financial institution.

  • Money$mart Camps are financial management seminars created specifically for Kansas middle school students to teach sound, personal financial philosophies and practices in a fun environment that enhances leadership and teamwork skills.

    Generally, topics will include the importance of saving, budgeting, make wise money choices and credit information. Camps are sponsored by the State Treasurer's Office and a financial institution or business and are held throughout the state.

It is aimed at grades 5-8, but can be used at any age level as an introductory course into finance. This program is typically taught by elementary and middle school teachers and has enough program modules and instruction to be a full semester class.   • Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas is a class offered in almost 20 Kansas high schools that teaches high school students about different aspects of business. The class teaches the students to think creatively, to be good employees and to be responsible in the business world.   • Citigroup's Credit-Ed Challenge is a program aimed at educating college students about credit and budgeting. The program can be taken individually online or workshop materials may be ordered to hold a workshop for students. The program targets college undergraduate students. The workshop materials and on-line program are both free.

The programs target various age groups: college students, homebuyers, seniors and many others. Classes are offered in various locations or you can schedule a class and have a speaker come and discuss a financial topic to your group.

  • Kansas Saves is an on-line program that helps people set up savings accounts for future needs, i.e., a house, car, retirement, etc. The program helps you set up the account, and encourages regular deposits to meet your savings goal. The program also gives tips on how to save by cutting certain unnecessary expenses.

  • Money Smart is a program through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation that helps adults become better educated about money and financial responsibility. The program is either offered through an on-line course available to individuals or the educational materials can be ordered so that the program can be taught to groups of people.
